I love calving season at the ranch (in case you haven't gathered that from past years)! This year the calves were sneaky--which I suppose is often the case! However, I told my aunt and uncle to call me as soon as they knew there was a calf on the way. I got the call EARLY one morning and hurried out to the ranch--still in my pajamas! In fact, I got to the ranch before the sun had even come up! We certainly didn't have to wait long before a baby was born! After the calving, Aunt Dee cooked us a delicious breakfast in the nice warm house! And I then I went home and crawled back in bed!
It was certainly NOT a warm morning! Uncle Jim brought out a heater for us to warm up by! He said to me, "This is crazy! We never used to watch calves be born . . . until you came along!"
EMMA IN LABOR!
doesn't look like she is having much fun!
BY NOW YOU ALL KNOW TO HIDE YOUR EYES IF YOU WOULD RATHER NOT SEE THE GRAPHIC BIRTH SCENES! I DID REALIZE THIS WAS THE FIRST CALF I SAW BE BORN IN THE DAYLIGHT! WHAT A TREAT!
HOOVES!
WHAT A WELCOMING--FACE IN THE MANURE!
SHE WAS A GOOD MAMA AND IMMEDIATELY STARTED CLEANING UP BABY!
I LOVE THAT THEY STEAM IN THE COOL FEBRUARY AIR!
AH, RANCH LIFE!
DESPITE THE ARRIVAL OF A NEW BABY, LIFE MUST GO ON.
CECE THE CAT TAKES CARE OF BUSINESS, OBLIVIOUS TO THE BIG EVENT!
AFTER BREAKFAST WE WENT BACK OUT TO SEE BABY'S PROGRESS.
SHE WAS MOSTLY DRIED OFF AND WALKING AROUND ALREADY!
SAYING HELLO!
AND NOW FOR A FEW MORE CALF TALES . . .
AS I MENTIONED, I MISSED SOME OF THE OTHER BIRTHS OUT AT THE RANCH.
UNFORTUNATELY, TUFFY'S CALF DID NOT SURVIVE. JIM AND JESSIE QUICKLY BOUGHT A NEW CALF AND INTRODUCED HIM TO THE NOW CALF-LESS MAMA. WITH SOME OLD RANCH TRICKS, TUFFY ADOPTED HIM AND RAISED HIM AS HER OWN!
I WENT OVER TO MEET HIM AND THOUGHT HE WAS WONDERFUL!
LOOK AT HOW SWEET HE WAS--HE HAS SINCE OUTGROWN THAT!
I ALSO MISSED THE BIRTH OF TWINS!
DANG IT!
ONE OF THE TWINS ISN'T SO FRIENDLY . . .
BUT THE OTHER LOVES PEOPLE--AND STILL DOES!
AND I LOVE THAT SHE STUCK OUT HER TONGUE ALL THE TIME.
I DO THINK SHE HAS OUTGROWN THAT HABIT!
I LOVE CALVES!
ITS A GOOD THING THEY GROW UP TO BE NASTY OLD COWS!
